Expectations

Even though this is a community band and not every musician is a professional, the expectation is that all participants act in a professional manner. When everyone does their part, it makes the whole experience a lot more enjoyable for everyone.

We expect you to:

  • Show up to practice regularly and on time. Downbeat is 7:30pm sharp so we ask that you be in your seat and ready to play at 7:25.
  • Be on time to concerts. Call is 1 hour prior to concert start time so that we can set up, warm up, tune up, do a little practice and get all our "business" settled before the curtain opens.
  • Help set up and take down chairs, stands and equipment. Somebody is always there early to set up for you, but it would be great if you could get to rehearsal a bit early to help set up, as it takes a bit of doing. Likewise, we ask that each participant put their own chair and stand away at the end of rehearsal.
  • Help the band manager haul the equipment to and from the rehearsal hall when we have a concert. It is a lot of work so the more that help, the easier the workload.
  • Pay your dues. Yes, we are "non-profit" but unfortunately it doesn't mean we get stuff for free. Your dues help keep us going.
  • Read the handbook. The handbook has more information than on the website. You'll receive a handbook when you become a member and have paid your dues.

Dues

Annual membership dues are $40 for adults and $20 for students.

Dues are collected in February, or during the first month that you join the band. We request that you become a member in order to participate in concerts.

Dues help pay for a number of business expenses, such as music, instruments, advertising costs and various other operating expenses.

In addition, the uniform requirement for most concerts is our signature white polo shirt with the MHWS logo. You can purchase the uniform shirt for $25 from the treasurer or ask one of the board members.

Concert Protocol

Be at the concert site no later than 1-hour before the concert starts. This is important so we can set up, warm up, tune up, practice a little and get all our "business" settled before the curtain opens.

If you can show up at the rehearsal hall beforehand to help haul equipment to the concert, your services will be greatly appreciated. Please see the band manager for details about times and specifics.

Concert Dress

Required uniform for most concerts is black pants or skirt and our polo shirt with our logo. If you do not have one, contact a board member and they will get one for you. Shirts are $25.

Fourth of July concert is blue or black jeans with the logo polo shirt. We strongly recommend you bring sunglasses, sunscreen, water, and a hat, as it can get pretty toasty out there. You'll also need to use a lyre for the music unless you can memorize the pieces!

Our holiday concert is more formal, so the dresscode is traditional black and white. Men are required to wear ties or bow ties. Offsetting the black and white with tasteful holiday-colored jewelry, ties or other fun ornamentation is okay, and even encouraged.
