An Evening of Romance
Playing to a nearly full house, both the MHWS and the GHS Wind Ensemble played a variety of works, nearly all from the "Romantic" Period. The dynamic New Madison Square Garden March by K.L. King's played by the MHWS was quite a wake up piece after Intermission! Of particular note was the stellar performance by all GHS players of the fast, difficult passages of Tchaikovsky’s 4th Symphony Finale... an incredibly well done rendition!!

Winter Concert - Celebration of the Holly
The Celebration of the Holly harks back to pagan times when the old gods of the forest were worshipped, and the evergreen of the leaves was celebrated for its strong life qualities at the dead of winter. Bands of wrapped-up singers have strolled our streets and villages for centuries entertaining householders with festive songs. Originally they were mummers, performing traditional plays, and later became known as waits, who promenaded through the town every evening before Christmas.
Festive Overture, Op. 96.................................... Dimitri Shostakovich (1906-1975)
Procession of the Nobles from “Mlada”..... Nicholas Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908)
Valse de Fleurs, Op. 71a
from “The Nutcracker” Suite.................................. Pietre Tchaikovsky (1840-1893)
Berceuse and Finale from the “Firebird Suite”............ Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971)
The second half of the program contains a selection of Christmas carols from around the world. Some are familiar, while others less known to us have beautiful melodies. We thought you would enjoy a historical perspective.
